For those wishing to engage further with the Sanctuary movement in response to the Federal Government’s treatment of people seeking asylum, the Australian Churches Refugee Taskforce is maintaining a database of church communities that have extended an offer of sanctuary to people seeking asylum who are at risk of being removed from Australia and placed in offshore detention.
CCVT believes that this act of peaceful civil disobedience is an appropriate response to the Federal Government’s ongoing violation of international refugee law, and encourages communities to have a long, careful, and informed internal discussion about extending the offer of sanctuary to vulnerable people seeking asylum. This response is not to be undertaken lightly, and must be made in consultation with church leaders within your community.
For those wishing to learn more about the sanctuary movement, news articles are available on the National Council of Churches website, along with a form to either express a willingness to offer sanctuary, or to request more information.
