From GMP's In Partnership newsletter, August 2016.
A person with expertise in ‘brand identity’ recently asked me what is distinctive about GMP and our work. The question was asked so that GMP could further understand our identity, and define what distinguishes us from the many other ministries who seek support. I gave several answers to this question: “We are Churches of Christ and have diverse projects in Australia and overseas…” and so I went on. She listened, and at the end commented that one thing in particular stood out. I had said that: “we know our partners personally”.
This may seem unsophisticated as a point of uniqueness, and may be something that we take for granted. Our partners are our sisters and brothers in Jesus Christ. We are members of the one body, each of us a part of Christ’s Church. This gives our partnerships a spiritual and relational depth. GMP’s partners are in a direct relationship with us. We know their names. We share with you their work and identity (unless risk prevents us). When we visit, teams and staff stay with our partners in their settings of work and ministry; meeting together we enjoy their culture, company and food. We honour their desire to serve Jesus Christ.
The projects are plans that our partners have. Projects are truly local in design, implementation and in structure. GMP comes alongside and helps make what our partners plan, happen. One consequence of this is the diversity of projects across all of GMP’s partners. Another is that each of our partnerships is different. There is no one size fits all approach. Time is taken in project planning, development and design.
When our partners are vulnerable we are concerned for them and contact them. Recently, GMP has been communicating with our friends in Juba (South Sudan) reassuring them that we were thinking and praying for them in the midst of the fighting there. During NADOC week we celebrated our Indigenous partners and their culture and identity, and we are excited with the new possibilities at Port Hedland (WA).
Our partners know and trust us. In fact, all our partnerships are two-way. They are our partners, and each of us their partners also. We all share a common faith in Jesus Christ and a desire to have others experience the grace, compassion and the love of God.
