The Executive Officer of the Churches of Christ in Victoria and Tasmania, Paul Cameron, today added his voice to the call by Anglican Primate, Archbishop Phillip Freier, for the Federal Government to change its “narrative on children in detention.”

Australia’s current practices are not only morally wrong but violate international law. Mr Cameron said that while “the issue of asylum seekers is incredibly complex the bottom line is that we are dealing with human lives.”

“If we are honest,” he said, “to use the words of our now Prime Minister, Mr Malcolm Turnbull from September 23 last year, we know that the policy is both tough and harsh.” [1]

Mr Cameron said that several Churches of Christ congregations in urban Melbourne were considering offering sanctuary to those seeking refuge, as an alternative to being returned to the harsh conditions on Manus Island and Nauru. While this action would be undertaken at each congregation’s discretion, it is considered an appropriate response.
