“The ability to learn more about my faith as part of my senior schooling studies has been amazing. It truly has been life-changing.”
In 2003 a small group of Christian leaders, frustrated by limited opportunities for Christian growth for young people, set out to raise up a generation who would act as the hands and feet of Jesus, demonstrating his love in every area of life. The result was Vetamorphus, a year-long discipleship experience that young people can complete as part of their senior school certificate, with over 2000 graduates to date.
Overseeing all of this is Veta Youth, a youth discipleship movement offering authentic Christian learning across Australia and beyond. Veta Youth partners with schools and churches to support the spiritual development of young people.
About 300 students complete Vetamorphus each year, and 2017 will see the launch of Veta Neo, a discipleship experience for students in years 7-10.
Driving this movement is a strong sense of vocation; that Veta is called to come alongside schools and churches and help them nurture young people in their faith, to see them flourishing in all areas of life.
With so many churches struggling to meet the needs of young people in discovering and nurturing their faith, this is a huge need. Many young people don’t even have a way to express their spiritual side, their longing, their soul. It’s hidden, suppressed. The cultural resistances to expressing this side of themselves are growing.
Discipleship, sharing with a faith community, and learning ways to connect with God is an eternally significant endeavour. It is a mandate for the church to disciple young people, and so Veta Youth supports churches to do this in a culturally relevant way—through education.
Being accredited within the education system means that faith can be a part of a young person’s everyday life; students can grow in their faith and gain school credit at the same time. Incorporation into education confers time, energy, resources, and status; it shows young people that this is important.
By bringing discipleship and education together, Veta Youth is enabling churches and schools to take their students on a genuine journey of faith in Jesus, and to do so with confidence and support.
