Neighbourhood Engagement Catalysts

Wednesday, 9 March 2016

It is with real excitement and expectation that we welcome Gabriel and Catherine Hingley to a new Neighbourhood Engagement Catalyst role. This appointment is the next step in the transition of the former ‘Community Care’ Partner Department, following the completion of Paul Arnott’s time in the role.  Catherine and Gabriel will share a 0.8 part-time role within the Communities team that already consists of Michael Vanderree, Nathan Oliver, and Scott Mageean.

Gabriel and Catherine have served the UNOH team as mission workers in the culturally diverse suburb of Noble Park for the past ten years. Throughout this time, they have demonstrated a clear and determined commitment to build a faithful testimony to a lived-out reality of “God who moved into the neighbourhood” through radical community engagement. It is this commitment to ministry and neighbourhood engagement that suits them ideally to partner with our churches and agencies in exploring and developing an effective ministry and mission footprint. They remain UNOH workers and are looking forward to sharing some of their learnings in mission with others in our movement.

Communities of Hope and Compassion that continue seeking to take seriously Jesus’ call to welcome the stranger and demonstrate Kingdom hospitality will place ‘community care’ as an integral part of their mission, rather than a department separated from other aspects of ministry. Caring for the community will be carried out not so much in dutiful service “because it’s a good thing to do”, but because Jesus calls all of us as His followers to love our neighbours, and to engage with our neighbourhood in such a way that our daily encounters become signs and foretastes of the Kingdom. This is the spirit with which Gabriel and Catherine will enter conversations and dialogue with churches and agencies.

Gabriel and Catherine are working together in this role on Tuesdays, while Gabriel is also available on Mondays and Wednesdays. You can contact them via the Fairfield office or by email: or
