Works published in YVQ Annual in 2017 will explore the topic prompt, IMAGINE A FAIRER WORLD. The following materials are presented as resources to spark prophetic and creative imagination.

Even a cursory examination of our world shows that things are not as they should be. Genesis tells us that God created a world where everything was in its place, and the created world provided for the needs of its residents without the need for toil but instead with the bless-ed/-ing responsibility of stewardship.

Today, as in the Genesis narrative, greed and humanity’s brokenness has destabilised God’s created order, and inequality, poverty, and marginalisation are rife throughout the world—overseas and in our own backyards. Racial injustice, gender inequality, economic strife, absence of representation in politics and the media, mass incarceration of Australia’s First Peoples, the mistreatment of people with disability, the abuse of the young, the old, and the vulnerable, climate injustice and poor stewardship—all these things exist despite Jesus’ clear message of “good news to the poor” (Luke 4:18) and the removal of divisions within God’s Kingdom (Galatians 3:28).

What would it take to bring about a fairer world, in line with God’s vision? With an ear to the Spirit’s prophetic prompting, respond creatively to one or more of the following topics, or forge your own path in an area you are passionate about.

Racial Injustice

What would it look like to bring about an end to the mistreatment, malignment, criminalisation, and abuse directed towards people of non-white backgrounds—in particular members of Australia’s First Nations?

Gender Inequality

How can we address the systemic issues of gender inequality that are embedded in our society, and start to undo the damage done to women and men through the imposition of toxic expectations of femininity and masculinity?

Economic Strife

What might it take to overturn the dominant economic experience of our world, in which the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, and workers are exploited overseas and in our country for the profit of the wealthy?

Abuse of Vulnerable Peoples

In what ways can we bring God’s protection to situations of abuse where vulnerable people including children, the elderly, and people with disability are harmed through negligence or cruelty?
